Adopter FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Our Adopter FAQ is here to help you understand the adoption process, requirements, and what to expect when welcoming a new pet into your home.
Applicants must be 21 years of age or older. Applicants aged 18–21 may be approved on a case‑by‑case basis. If renting, landlord approval is required. Any pets in the home must be spayed/neutered, vaccinated (Rabies, Distemper), and well cared for. A safe, stable home environment is required. All applicants must complete reference checks and a home visit before approval.
What are the requirements to adopt?
How long does the adoption process take?
Most adoptions take between 3-7 days, depending on reference responses and completing the home visit. We work as quickly as possible while ensuring each match is safe and appropriate.
What is the adoption fee?
Adoption fees will be posted once the animal is available for adoption.
What does the adoption fee include?
The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of veterinary care, and rescue operational costs associated with that care. Veterinary care for animals in our care typically include the following:
-
Wellness Exam
-
Core Vaccines (Distemper, Lyme, Lepto)
-
Rabies Vaccine
-
Heartworm Test
-
Heartworm Preventives
-
Flea/Tick Preventives
-
Spay/Neuter
-
Dental
-
Microchip (including registration)
-
Any additional medical care needed while in rescue
Can I adopt if I have other pets at home?
Yes! Many of our animals do well with other pets. Your current pets must be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and in good health. We can help guide introductions and ensure the new pet you're interested in is a good fit for you and your hosehold.
Can I adopt if I rent?
Yes, as long as your landlord allows pets. We verify pet policies with landlords during our reference check. Please confirm any breed or size restrictions with yoru landlord before applying.
Do you allow out of state adoptions?
What we look for is the right fit for both the pet and the adopter. As long as home visits can be completed virtually, and all other adoption requirements can be made, we do not limit adoptions by geography. Please note that while home visit scan e completed virtually, meet-and-greets must be completed in person to allow both you and the animal to interact and ensure it is truly the right fit for you both.
Can I meet the animal I'm interested in prior to applying to adopt?
This is possible if the animal is at a public adoption event. Otherwise, we do require an application before scheduling a meet-and-greet. This helps ensure the animal is a potential match for both parties, and helps us respect the foster's family's time.
What supplies do I need before adoption day?
We recommend having the following:
-
Leash and collar
-
Crate
-
Food and water bowls
-
High-quality food (we will tell you what the animal is currently eating so that you can transition safetly.)
-
Training treats
-
A quiet prepared space for decompression
What support do you offer after adoption?
We provide guidance on decompression, training, nutrition, behavior, and integration with other pets. You can reach out anytime! We want every adoption to be a lifelong success.
What kinds of records can I expect to receive with the adoption?
We do our best to share information openly and transparently. You can expect to receive copies of records we have related to the animal. This will include any history that we may know of as well as veterinary care records.
How do you match adopters with animals?
We consider your lifestyle, experience, home environment, other pets, and what you're looking for in a pet. Our goal is always the best long-term fit for both you and the pet. Our fosters are key in helping us understand what the pet's needs are and you help us understand what your needs are. Together we simply look for what fits for both.
If I happen to be the foster, can I adopt the animal I'm fostering?
Yes. Foster families receive priority consideration. If the animal is a good fit and meets your needs, and your family meets the needs of the animal, you may apply to adopt.
What kinds of payments do you accept to pay for the adoption fee?
We accept PayPal, Venmo, Credit or Debit cards, or Cash.
