Foster FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
What is involved in fostering?
Once your animal is known and available, you would pick up your foster along with whatever supplies you might need. You take them home, do introductions to your home and family, and provide love, a safe place, and a routine. We coordinate any and all vet needs. Once the animal is ready to be found by potential adopters, you would be asked to help write the animals bio by telling us all the details about your foster. Then once a potential adopter is found, you are involved in the meet and greet and giving your perspective on the potential fit with the potential adopter. We work with you throughout the entire process from the day you pick up the animal to the day he or she is adopted.
How long do fosters stay in foster homes?
It is different for every animal. It could take a few weeks, sometimes a few months, and sometimes it can take a bit longer. We like to wait at least a few weeks to ensure the animal has time to get evaluated by a vet, and that the fosters have had time to get to know the animal. Knowing the animal well helps us find the perfect forever home. If the length of time is too much, we work with you to make a transfer to another foster. Or, if signing up and committing longer term seems overwhelming, consider applying to temp foster. Temp fosters are involved in shorter term situations (e.g. covering while a foster is on vacation, etc.).
Can I choose which animal I want to foster?
Absolutely! We work to match the animal with your needs and lifestyle, and we want you involved in deciding who you'll foster!
What if I want to travel or something unexpected comes up?
If you need to travel, we’ll arrange backup care or move your foster to another approved home. Sadly, we can’t fit in your suitcase — but we’ll make sure your foster is safe and cared for.
What supplies do I need to start fostering?
You only need love, a safe place, and a routine. We provide the animal and the supplies needed to care for the animal. This includes kennels, food and water bowls, food, toys, leash and collar, harness, poop bags, beds, etc. While you can certainly choose to purchase your own supplies, it is not needed and personal purchases are not reimbursable (although may be tax deductible).
Who handles vet appointments and medical decisions?
We do. You are not responsible for vet costs or medical decisions. We only ask that you inform us in the event you have concerns or see symptoms that may need to be addressed.
What if my foster animal does not get along with my own pets?
We work with you to provide resources and support for slow purposeful and safe introductions. And, if needed, we will work to move the animal quickly and safely.
What if I've never fostered before?
Most of the best fosters started out with zero experience. We have great mentors and will be here to support you with each and every step.
Can I still foster if I already foster with another rescue?
Yes. Fresh Start Rescue welcomes fosters who also support other rescues. What matters most to us is the health, safety, and happiness of everyone in your home — people and animals alike. If you foster for multiple organizations, we simply ask for:

Clear communication between you and the rescues involved

Awareness of each animal’s needs, temperament, and medical status

Sharing of medical records when needed so all rescues involved can ensure animals are safe and appropriately placed
We are always willing to share medical files or behavioral notes with another rescue to support safe, coordinated care.
Ultimately, you are the one who decides what is best for your home and your animals. Our role is to support you, communicate openly, and ensure every animal receives safe, appropriate care.
Can I adopt my foster?
Yes. Fosters get first consideration for adoption before making the animal available for the public. We call this a foster fail and think it's the best possible fail there is!
What is required to become a foster?
Start by filling out an application. Applicants should be 21 years of age or older. Applicants aged 18-21 may be approved on a case-by-case basis and are still encouraged to apply. All applicants will need to have an environment that is safe and clean. If renting, applicants will need landlord approval (through a reference check). If fosters have pets in the home, those pets must be spayed/neutered, vaccinated (e.g. Rabies, Distemper) and well cared for. All applicants must provide references, go through a home visit and a background check. Once approved you'd work with us to find the animal that is a fit for you.
